I just bought my first Missouri Fox Trotter. How do I get it transferred into my name?
When you buy a fox trotter, the previous owner should give you the registration paper.
Look at the back of the registration paper and....
1st- write the name/names and address of new owners on lines provided in box that the previous owner signed off in. A maximum of two persons may jointly own a horse.
2nd- make sure that the previous owner has signed off on "signed" line
3rd- make sure "date of purchase" is filled in

Transfer Fee- $15.00 within 30 days of sale,
add $5.00 per month penalty after 30 days of "date of purchase" up to a maximum $60.00 penalty

You must be a current member to transfer a horse. If your horse is owned two persons, both must be members. No more than two persons may jointly own a horse.

Annual membership        (own a fox trotter)                                     $15.00
Associate membership    (do not own horse)                                    $15.00
Youth membership         (17 years old & under & own a horse)       $15.00
Youth associate membership (17 years old & under)                        $15.00
Corporate membership   (farm or corporation)                                 $25.00
All above memberships are renewed by December 31st of calendar year
Lifetime membership        (one time fee, must own a horse)               $150.00

Do I have to own a fox trotter to become a member of the MFTHBA?
No - you can become an associate member
You must own a horse to have an annual, youth, corporate or lifetime membership.

Can I just receive The Journal and not become a member?
Yes - A journal subscription is mailed 1st class every month at a cost of $25.00 annually
You do not have to be a member to receive The Journal.

My registered fox trotter mare just had a foal. How do I get it registered?
You can download the registration form (2 pages) from our website at

Foal Registration Form-
Section A...fill out sex and foaling date
Section B...fill out 3 name choices for horse (no more than 30 characters, including punctuation &    spaces).
Section C...fill out breeder's certificate - name of sire and dam, breeding date, color/markings of mare, owner of stallion at time of breeding (signature), owner of mare at time of breeding (signature)
Section D...Foal owner/owners signature and address
Section E...Markings and color details - all white markings must be indicated on horse drawing with written description, and please circle color of horse.
If horse is spotted...2 identical copies of one picture must be submitted of the left side of the horse.
    -picture must show entire left side of horse's body (head, trunk, legs, feet)
    -if horse is not spotted on left side, send two additional photos of the right side
    -Horse's entire body frame must be able to fit into a 3" wide by 2 1/2" high space. No exceptions. Do not trim picture yourself, this will be done in the office.

What is the cost to register a stallion, gelding, and mare (17 months or older)?
Stallion     $200.00
Gelding    $65.00
Mare       $100.00
You will use the foal registration form to register all three.

If I lose my registration papers, what can I do?
You can apply for a duplicate. You will find the form on our website

Print "Affidavit of Change Statement", fill out the duplicate portion and sign and date box #1 at the bottom of the page.
You must own the horse in question to apply for a duplicate.
You must also be a current member to apply for a duplicate.

How do I get a DNA kit?
You can purchase a DNA kit from the MFTHBA office by mailing in a request along with $50.00 or calling an order in with a credit card.

A DNA kit is used by pulling (at least 50 hairs with root attached) hair from the mane and tail and does not require a veterinarian.

What is the difference between Brown Papered and Blue Papered?
Blue Papered- (fourth generation foals) these are either fillies or colts that have the past three generations fully and permanently registered in the MFTHBA.
Brown Papered- Any registered foal not considered Blue Papered will fall into this category.
